What is Magic Ring and its Use

Slip knot is commonly used by crocheters to start their project. To make a round project, I crochet a few chains then slip stitch at the first chain to make a small loop. It forms a strong base of round project but fixed at its sizes, which sometimes I have to undo the chain loop if I found the number of chains is not working for my project.

Then, I learned about magic ring to start a round crochet project.

Magic ring is a starter to make a rounded crochet project that require to make full circle . It is also known as magic circle. Unlike starting with a loop of chains, magic ring is adjustable compared to a loop of chain. Hence, making it more versatile. It can be done by performing an unfinished slip knot, then crochet through the yarn string. After finishing crocheting around the magic ring, pull the extra yarn to adjust. Magic ring often used in rounded nature crochet project such as hat, amigurumi, flower petals, coasters and granny squares.

How do I keep my magic ring tight?

After finish the desired number of stitches, slip stitch at the first stitch. Then, pull the yarn tail, making sure that the loop is closed. Optionally, you can secure the magic ring by sewing the tail around the circle by using tapestry needle.

What are the uses of magic ring?

Magic ring can be used in rounded projects. Surprisingly, there are so many crochet projects that can be started with a magic ring!

What is the difference between magic ring and loop of chain?

There’s definitely a clear difference between crochet a magic ring and crochet a loop of chains. Each of them has their own advantages and disadvantages depending on what type of project you are doing.

Both of the techniques are used for circular round crochet projects.

I recommend using magic ring in a project that require full crocheted circle. I don’t recommend using it in a partial circle.

I recommend using loop of chains in a partial circle pattern rather than full crocheted circle. Crocheting a loop of chains for full circle will leave you a hole space in the center as the loop is fixed and cannot be closed.

What does 6 sc in magic ring mean?

When you stumbled upon an instruction says: work 6 sc in magic ring – it means you have to work on 6 sc around the magic ring. When you have finished, pull the yarn tail to close the magic ring completely. Optionally, you can secure the magic ring by using a tapestry needle and sew the tail across the round.

It same goes to; work 6 dc in magic ring, or, work 6 tr in a magic ring.

Is a magic ring always 6 stitches?

Lots of crochet design starts a magic ring with 6 stitches. It does not necessarily to start with 6 stitches. I have a rose crochet pattern that started with 15 double crochet on the magic ring created.
